Well, that's what Scott Lehigh of the Boston Globe would have you believe. In an article in today's Boston Globe online edition, Scott says that the senior Senator from Massachusetts is "thinking of the best interest of the state he loves."
Well, let's take a look at this shall we? Lehigh even admits how the 2004 legislation removing the ability of the Governor to appoint a successor came to be:
Just a few years ago, state law gave the governor the ability to appoint a successor in the event of a Senate vacancy. But in 2004, the Democratic Legislature rewrote the law to require a special election because they didn’t want Mitt Romney to appoint a fellow Republican if John Kerry won the presidency. So to revise the law again will open them to charges of hypocrisy — and of a back-room deal designed to help President Obama.
Of course, to Scott Lehigh, Kennedy removes all doubt with his 'selfless' letter that this is anything but blatant hypocrisy.
Remember, it is now Deval Patrick, a Democrat who is the Governor and, should he be given the task of appointing a new Senator to take Kennedy's place, most likely to appoint another Democrat.
Furthermore, it's well known that Kennedy has suggested that his wife succeed him as Senator. Does a man who looks to subvert the will of the people by using an elected office as a charitable gift upon death strike you as selfless? Last I checked, that's called nepotism.
Finally, if Kennedy was truly selfless, he would resign from his position right now. It's well known that, with his poor health, he's been pretty much unavailable in Washington these days. Which means that he's not showing up to vote his position on the topics of the day. How is that best serving the interests of the state of Massachussetts.
Can we at least wait until Ted Kennedy passes before we start throwing bouquets at the man and revising his life to make him appear as something he is not?
