Well, not really the whole weekend, just Saturday but that one day felt like 3 weekends in one!
Our weekend started out Friday evening with Jen, Steve and Juju, a pitcher of rum punch and grilled chicken, sweet potato salad, roasted potatoes and grilled zucchini! And of course we went swimming. The pool water has been incredible so far this year! We've used it more this year than any year since Al and I have been together! The end of the night found Jen, Juju and I at The Millhouse for some ice cream! Yummmm!
Saturday we slept in, skipping our yoga class (oops!) had a quick breakfast and then hit the road. It had been forecasting rain all week but the last time we listened to the weather report we ended up staying home on a gorgeous sunny day! We hit a little rain on the way down but the clouds seemed to be moving away so we held out hope and drove towards bluer skies.
We were rewarded! It was a gorgeous day in Newport, with a great warm breeze and clear skies. At one point the skies had opened up for a mid afternoon shower but we were in a restaurant at the bar enjoying a drink while waiting for an outdoor table under the awning to open up. By the time our table was ready, the sky had cleared and the sun was shining again. To make things even better, we were seated across from a tent where a man was playing a steel drum! Ah, heaven!
After a light lunch, we spent about an hour just walking and window shopping then went and planted ourselves down at The Landing a great dockside bar and grille where they had a great soloist on the guitar singing favorite hits.

I think we must have spent 3-4 hours just sitting there enjoying the breeze, enjoying the drinks, and most importantly enjoying each others company! Ivan met us there and we sat and caught up, discussing plans for our annual New Year's jaunt for another hour or so and then parted ways. The clouds had started to roll in again so we made our exit at the perfect time. We got home around 7:45 and contented ourselves to snuggle on the couch and watch Zombieland.
Not my kind of flick but actually turned out pretty funny! At one point during the movie, during a gun fight, we heard an earsplitting, earth shaking BOOM! I jumped up but Al just assumed his parents had dropped something upstairs (not unlike them!). My first thought was that the thunderstorms had finally come and with a vengeance but I went upstairs anyway to make sure everything was all right. They thought that Al had brought home an M80 and set it off!
Then I remembered as we were driving down our road coming home from Newport that our neighbors were having a fireworks show! Police tape marking off a makeshift parking lot and cars already lined up in their front yards reminded me that maybe that's what the explosion was. So I ran to the top of the driveway like an excited little girl and sure enough there was a show going on! So I ran back to the house and had to practically unglue Al from the couch but in the end we walked up to our property where we had a perfect view of a professional fireworks display. Our neighbors from across the street were also there enjoying the show along with random cars that happened to be driving down the street and pulled over.
It was a fantastic show rivaling any show you might see in the city! It's great to know that next year we'll be able to set up lawn chairs in the front yard and watch them from our own home! Sunday was great too! We slept in, went to the rock gym, did our weekly grocery shop and then vegged out the rest of the day, eating dinner at a normal hour and just enjoy each others company. It's been a long time since we've been able to hang out just the two of us together and it was much needed! Al made a great fish dinner and we sat out on the deck and then went for a swim where we played around like two teenagers! Wow, it makes me feel old to say that!
All in all, a GREAT weekend!
